General Questions

BAC stands for blood alcohol content, sometimes called blood alcohol concentration. It’s the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream. A BAC of 0.08 means 0.08% of your blood volume is alcohol.
It’s a solid estimate, generally within 15 to 20% of an actual breath or blood test. Choosing the Body Fat Percentage model, logging your food intake accurately, and adjusting the elimination rate if you know your own metabolism will get you closer to a realistic number.

Using the Calculator

Classic Widmark is the standard formula most calculators use, based on weight and biological sex. Watson Body-Water is a refinement that’s generally more accurate for most adults. Body Fat Percentage is the most precise, since it accounts for your actual lean-to-fat ratio rather than an average.
Food eaten before or during drinking can lower your peak BAC by slowing absorption, which is why this calculator has a dedicated food toggle. Coffee and water do nothing to speed up how fast your liver clears alcohol that’s already in your blood.

Legal Limits & Driving

The standard driving limit is 0.08% in nearly every US state. Utah is the exception, at 0.05%. Commercial drivers are held to 0.04% nationwide, and drivers under 21 face much stricter zero tolerance limits that vary by state.
Yes, in many states. Officers can charge impaired driving offenses below the standard limit if they believe your driving was actually affected, and lower limits for commercial, rideshare, and underage drivers apply regardless of the standard 0.08% line.
Most of the UK (England, Wales, and Northern Ireland) and much of the EU use a 0.05% limit. Scotland also uses 0.05%. Some countries, including Hungary and Czechia, use a 0.00% zero tolerance limit.
Several states, including California, apply a stricter limit, often 0.04%, to for-hire drivers such as taxi, limousine, and rideshare drivers while a passenger is in the vehicle. This matches the same standard used for commercial drivers.

Alcohol, Metabolism & Your Body

There’s no shortcut. The only thing that lowers BAC is time, roughly 0.015% per hour on average. If your BAC is 0.08%, expect somewhere around five to six hours before you’re back to fully sober.
Water helps with dehydration and can ease some symptoms of drinking, but it does not speed up how quickly your liver processes alcohol. Only time lowers BAC.
BAC depends on more than drink count. Body weight, sex, muscle-to-fat ratio, food intake, and age all change how alcohol distributes through your body, which is why the same three drinks can produce very different readings in two different people.
On average, women have a lower percentage of body water than men, so the same amount of alcohol becomes more concentrated in their bloodstream. This is one of the reasons this calculator asks for biological sex as an input.
In the US, a standard drink equals about 14 grams of pure alcohol. That’s roughly one 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, one 5 oz glass of wine at 12% ABV, or one 1.5 oz shot of liquor at 40% ABV.

Testing & Detection

Roughly 0.015% BAC clears per hour on average. A BAC of 0.08% takes about five to six hours to reach zero, though heavier sessions can take considerably longer.
A standard urine test can detect alcohol for 12 to 48 hours. A more sensitive EtG test, often used in legal or workplace settings, can detect alcohol use up to 72 to 80 hours after drinking.
Hair follicle testing can detect alcohol use going back up to 90 days. Unlike other tests, it’s used to establish a longer-term pattern rather than a single recent drink.
Yes. If you drank heavily or late at night, your BAC may still be well above zero the next morning. A large share of DUI arrests happen the morning after drinking, not the same night.
